PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate processing of Japanese lacquer coating of a design desig nated by a seal purchaser on a seal member body by executing the lacquer coating by seal purchaser's designating or a Japanese lacquer coating work participation to a seal material body mounting a handgrip bar, then removing the bar and then executing engraving of a seal surface. SOLUTION: As a seal material, a material which can be coated with Japanese lacquer is adopted. The seal material is obtained by integrally cutting a seal material body and a handgrip bar or adhering a separately manufactured handgrip bar to the body with an adhesive or the like. In the lacquer coating, a coated surface cannot be brought into contact until the surface is dried. Since the body has a short length, it is necessary to pay attention to a holding part when coated. More particularly, a seal material integrated with a handgrip bar 3 having a smaller diameter by about 3 cm in length than that of the body 1 with the seal surface of the body 1 made of wood having about 6 cm is cut out from a raw material. The bar 3 is held by fingers, the body 1 is coated with the Japanese lacquer, dried by using a hole provided at the bar 3, then the bar 3 is removed, and the surface 2 is engraved as prescribed.
