PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an intermediate for a naphthalene derivative having a steroid C17,20 inhibiting function, or the like, by a reduced number of steps in a high yield without using a heavy metal compound. SOLUTION: This method comprises reacting a compound represented by formula I (A is imidazole) or its salt with a compound represented by the formula R-M1 [R is a hydrocarbon or a heterocyclic ring; and M1 is an alkaline metal or the formula Mg-Y1 (Y1 is a halogen)] or its salt, e.g. isopropyl magnesium, and then reacts the product with an acid, e.g. sulfuric acid, to form a compound represented by formula II, e.g. 1-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)-2-methyl-propanene. These reactions are normally effected in a solvent (e.g. tetrachydrofuran) in the presence of water, preferably at -20 to 100 deg.C for approximately 5 minutes to 48 hours. It is preferable to add the acid to the product at 1 to 50 equivalents per equivalent of the compound represented by formula I. The compound represented by formula II is a useful intermediate for a compound represented by formula III.
