The invention relates to a device and to a method for producing a defined value for the control of at least one drive, especially for a machine tool. At least two partial program positions (X1, Y1, Z1; X2, Y2, Z2; X3, Y3, Z3) are deposited in a partial program (20) which describe the trajectory of a tool (12) that is displaced by the at least one drive (18). A control (18) determines from the partial program (20) at least one defined drive value (VA(S)) for controlling the drive (18). The device is provided with means (18) which determine a path (S) that lies between the at least two partial program positions (X1, Y1, Z1; X3, Y3, Z3) and that produces the defined drive value (VA(S)) on the basis of the path (S) and at least one characteristic value (V1, V2) of the partial program.
