Process for automatically operating a high speed slabbing mill comprises measuring the stopping or sliding movement online over the casting time. The process is as follows:- -The changes in the bath mirror movement are measured online in mm/min. -The wide side heat currents are measured online. -Measuring the narrow side heat currents online in MW/m<2> over the casting time. - Measuring steel temperature in the distributor over the casting time. - Measuring the actual speed in m/min. online over the casting time. - Comparing the heat current ratios for compensation of the narrow side copper plate conicities to each other and for correction in relation to the wide side heat currents. - Comparing the steel temperature in the distributor with the maximum speed for a corresponding compensation of the actual casting speed.
