PURPOSE: A method for controlling a pan/tilt camera is provided so that software processing speed and a camera rotation speed can be improved by virtually dividing a screen at predetermined intervals, detecting an object position by coordinates of the divided screens, and moving the camera. CONSTITUTION: A rotation direction and movement of a camera are calculated by using a screen center position of the camera and a center position of an object. The camera is moved according to a previously-set rotation speed and the calculated rotation direction and movement, by driving a pan motor and a tilt motor by a timer interrupt at predetermined intervals. Here, in order to control the motors, the peripheral devices and variables are initialized, and an external command is received and interpreted. When a direct direction conversion command is received, a rotation step number of the pan motor and a rotation step number of the tilt motor are set up by using the current screen center position of the camera and the center position of the object, thus rotating each motor. When a motor speed control command is received, the rotation speed of the pan motor and the rotation speed of the tilt motor have newly-inputted values, thus controlling the rotation speed of each motor. Accordingly, the camera is directly moved by detecting the position of the object. As a result, it is much easier to track the object and process software.
