PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for recognizing the operation of a portable phone is provided to input desired information in a potable phone by detecting the motion signals of the portable phone, depending on a user's writing operation, through an operation detection sensor and transferring the signals to an operation recognition unit. CONSTITUTION: A control unit judges whether a memo function is set up according to an input state of an operation recognition mode selection key of a key input unit(101). If it is judged that the memo function is set up, the control unit detects the motion of the portable phone through an operation detection sensor(101). If it is judged that the motion of the portable phone is detected, the control unit checks whether the motion of the portable phone is recognized through an operation recognition unit(103). The control unit converts the motion signals varied continuously according to the motion of the portable phone into operation data and temporarily stores the data in a memory unit(104). The control unit outputs the converted operation data to a display unit(105). The control unit displays so that a user can select whether he will store the motion data outputted to the display unit(106). If it is judged that a storage selection key is inputted through the key input unit, the control unit stores the motion data in the memory unit(107).
