Production of a porous silicon surface comprises electrolytically treating a solid silicon surface using an electrolyte bath (5) by moving plate- or strand-like silicon material (1) through the bath. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for producing a porous surface on silicon material comprising an electrolyte bath with electrodes (3, 6) and rollers (2) for conveying the silicon material through along the bath.
