A wavelength division multiplexing device (10) comprises a homogeneous refractive index collimating lens (16) for collimating a plurality of monochromatic optical beams (28), a mirror (18a), a diffraction grating (20), for combining the plurality of collimated, monochromatic optical beams into a multiplexed, polychromatic optical beam (30), and a homogeneous refractive index lens L (22) for focusing the multiplexed, output beam. The WDM is connected via coupling devices (14, 24) to optical fiber (12, 16) or active devices like photodiodes or lasers. In a preferred embodiment, the lenses are made of a material having a high refractive index to keep spherical aberrations low. The WDM may also contain additional boot lenses made of lower refractive index material.
