A high security locking mechanism (1) without any aperture or access from the outer side of the door (11), operated by an entry card (2) such as an electronic card or a smart card that communicates with a remote sensor or reader (5). The locking mechanism (1) is provided with means for accessing and operating in case of failure comprising a rigid sleeve (26) and a resilient rod (29) that may be threaded into the sleeve (26) for coupling to a shaft (8) within the locking mechanism (1) whereby the mechanism may be operated. The opening of the rigid sleeve (26) may be positioned at various locations within the door panel and it is invisible such that an unauthorized person, even if acquainted with the locking mechanism of the invention, is unable to locate the spot at which the door must be penetrated to reach the mechanism through the said sleeve (26).
