A monitoring system suitable for a vehicle 10 is disclosed. The system has a display 22 which displays an image of the road area 12 travelled by the vehicle 10. The system further comprises a controller 16 which is capable of allocating differing sets of grey values held in its memory 26 to the objects 18, 20 in the image.
