Copolymerization of 100 g conjugated diolefins with 20-2000 g vinyl aromatic compounds involves using 1 mu mol. - 10 mmol. catalysts comprising a rare earth metal compound(s) (a) and an organoaluminum compound(s) (c) and optionally a cyclopentadienyl compound(s) (b) in aliphatic and/or aromatic solvents at -30 - 140 degrees C in a mol. ratio of (a):(b):(c) of 1:0.01-1.99:1-1000 or of (a):(c) of 1:0.1-1000.
