PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antioxidant composition which is safe and excellent in antioxidant action by incorporating a lactulose as the effective component into the same. SOLUTION: The content of lactulose in the antioxidant composition is preferably 0.1 wt.% or higher. Lactulose commercially available or prepared by a known method can be used. For example, a 10% aqueous solution of commercially available milk sugar is mixed with NaOH; the mixture is heated at 70 deg.C for 30 min, cooled, purified with an ion-exchange resin, concentrated, cooled to be crystallized, and freed from unreacted milk sugar to give an aqueous lactulose solution having a solid content of about 68% (the content of lactulose in the solid content being about 79%); and the aqueous lactulose solution is purified with a strongly acidic ion-exchange resin, thus giving the antioxidant composition. This composition can be compounded with an antioxidant, e.g. commercially available vitamin E (tocopherol), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin A, orβ-carotene.
