PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detecting method, for a magnetic field, in which the magnetic field can be detected without being influenced by the L value of an MI element and which makes use of an MI effect. SOLUTION: A triangular-wave current from a high-frequency triangular-wave formation circuit 2 is made to flow to a high-permeability magnetic-body element 4. An output across both ends of the element 4 which is modulated by a change in an impedance across both ends of the element 4 due to an external magnetic field is demodulated by a detection circuit 5, and its demodulation signal is used as a detection output. When an exciting current is made to flow to the high-permeability magnetic-body element so that an external magnetic field is detected on the basis of the change in the impedance across both ends of the element due to the external magnetic field, an external magnetic field-to- signal output characteristic can be formed as a single-ridged quasi-linear characteristic because a triangular-wave current is used as the exciting current.
