PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a display unit capable of representing colors more than the number of filter materials by using less number of filter materials by allowing the light generated from an EL element unit to transmit at least two kinds of filters of different colors including a colorless one to form a display unit. SOLUTION: This EL display element has one or more than one color filters arranaged in parallel at a light taking-out side of an EL element unit. As the color filters, color filters used in a liquid crystal display or the like can be used, and the characteristic of color filters is adjusted corresponding to the light emitted from the EL element to optimize the taking-out efficiency and color purity. The light-proof characteristic and the contrast of the display can be improved by using the color filter capable of cutting the external light of a short wavelength which an EL element material and a fluorescent converting layer can absorb. An optical thin film such as a dielectric multilayer film can be also used for the color filter.
