PURPOSE: Disclosed is the subject new compound which has a highly specific, free radical-capturing and/or antioxidizing actions and is useful as an antioxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION: Phenolamine hydroxymandelic acid amides of the formula(I)£R1, R4 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl; R2 is H, O-R8(R8 is H or a 1-4C alkyl); R3 is H or a 1-22C alkyl; A1 is CH2 or CH2-CH2; R5-R7 are each H, O-R9 (R9 is H or a 1-4C alkyl)|, their stereoisomers or their mixture. For example, N-(3,4- dihydroxyphenethyl)- 2-hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxypyenyl)acetamide. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting an OH group-protected, activated hydroxymandelic acid with a phenolic OH group-protected phenolamine or its ammonium salt in the presence of a solvent and an auxiliary base.
