PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-noise and a high-recording density magnetic recording medium by setting a second magnetic layer and an abrasion resistant overcoat layer on a spacer layer having a larger crystal constant than Cr. SOLUTION: A lower layer 20, a first cobalt-based magnetic layer 30, a spacer layer 40, a second cobalt-based magnetic layer 50 and an overcoat layer 60 are sequentially layered on a substrate 10. The lower layer 20 is preferably a Cr-X alloy in which X is a metal and Cr-X has a lattice constant larger than Cr. The X can be substituted with Mo or W or a metal substitutable with the Mo or W. When a crystal constant of the alloy of the lower layer matches a crystal constant of an alloy of the magnetic layers, particles of the magnetic layers regularly grow, thus stably maintaining a degree of magnetic moment sequence. A higher coercive force arid a low read/write noise can be obtained at a plane, and eventually a good recording performance is obtained.
