Abrasive particles prepared by sintering alumina or bauxite powder have a surface/volume ratio above 2 mm<-1>, preferably above 10 mm<-1>, more preferably above 20 mm<-1>, and a truncated prism shape, preferably on two surfaces plane and perpendicular to the axis of the prism. The prism can have a section with concavities, such as a star-shaped section, and can have a symmetry of revolution of 3 to 6. The height/width ratio of the particles is preferably 1-2.5. An Independent claim is given for use of the abrasive particles in grinding wheels for steel.
