INTERACTIVE TELEVISION SYSTEM AND METHOD

A system and method are provided for generating, transmitting and presenting navigable video frames in an interactive broadcast television environment. Authoring tools (110) are utilized to define the content and visual appearance of a multiplicity of linked scenes, and to create a program structure. The scenes thus generated are encoded as video frames (140) and stored in a broadcast file system for cyclical transmission by a transmission apparatus (165). A user terminal (200), coupled to a television monitor (210), is configured to receive the cyclically transmitted frames via a broadcast channel and is additionally configured to receive and process user input, which may be advantageously provided through rudimentary controls located on a conventional remote control unit (220).
