The artificial respiration appts. has a valve (1) in the air line between the control unit and the breathing mask at the patient. The valve has a moving closure which blocks or releases the air flow path. During normal operation, with a pressure setting of 3-30 hPA, the closure (4) is positioned to give a free air flow during inhalation and exhalation, and the exhalation opening (A) remains in an open setting. In the event of a spontaneous breathing during a controlled breathing in the exhalation phase, or a flow failure or a defect in another flow path without resistance, an opening (E) at the valve (1) is opened at least partially. The closure (4) is held by spring tension against the pressure generated by the control unit.
