The component (4) is secured in a frame (2) above which a test head (5) moves along x and y axes. A control unit (SE) controls motors (M1,M2) to position the head. It also controls a motor (M3) which lowers the test head so that a punch (7) impacts the door and dents it, the depth of the dent being recorded by a measurement unit (6). The test head can then be repositioned to repeat the test at other points on the surface of the component
