The detector includes an optical sensor for detecting the light (L) reflected from a reflector (R), the light containing a characteristic light pattern which different significantly from the ambient light. The sensor signal is evaluated (P) to detect a person. The evaluation may be performed by pattern matching the light pattern in received image sequences, with a standard pattern stored in memory (M).
