An apparatus (10) for removing solids from a gaseous medium (12) has a funnel (60) above a partial region of the sintered base (34) which is directed with its lower edge (62) framing its large opening (64) towards the sintered base; a gap (66) between the lower edge of the funnel and the sintered base to let the particles from the particle layer into the region of the funnel; and base region of the sintered base which is more air permeable than the remainder of the sintered base region. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the removal of solids from a gaseous medium.
