The gear has an appliance for operating a taper disc wrap gear consisting of two pairs of taper discs (2,4) enclosed by a wrap. Each pair has a piston-cylinder unit exposed to pressure, and a piston-cylinder unit exposed to adjusting pressure. A transmission control valve arrangement is controlled by a control current. One pair of taper discs is exposed to a control current below a neutral value and the other pair of taper discs to a control current above the neutral value. The pressure is controlled by a torque sensor (16); a pump (14) provides the pressure which is controlled by a pre-tensioning valve. An electronic control is connected to sensors.
