PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fatty acid potassium salt solution which is excellent in productivity and economy and enables the separation of methanol after the saponification to be efficiently carried out by reacting a fatty acid alcohol ester with potassium hydroxide in the presence of propylene glycol. SOLUTION: Palm oil fatty acid methyl ester, coconut oil fatty acid methyl ester, methyl laurate, methyl myristate, and methyl palmitate are preferable as a fatty acid lower alcohol. Potassium hydroxide is used in the form of a solution. The reaction is conducted under normal pressure at 85 to 95 deg.C. The concentration of propylene glycol is preferably 15 to 50 wt.%. After the saponification, the reaction product is subjected to aging and topping followed by the adjustment of water content, giving the objective solution. The final concentration of the solution is preferably 50 to 75 wt.%. The solution viscosity is adjusted to 40 to 100 cP/50 deg.C. The solution is suitable as a material for liquid soap (body soap) and solid soap.
