PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an inexpensive image reader capable of preventing flicker and quickly reading out an image of high quality. SOLUTION: A document is read out as a digital picture signal by a photoelectric conversion part, the average peak value of K (integer number) pixels in a line is detected by a peak value detection part 13, the peak value of the detected line is applied to line correction by a light quantity variation correction part 3, and the distortion of light quantity depending on a plane position included in the image is removed by a shading correction part 4. In the reading mode of a shading waveform signal to be used as a reference signal, a signal whose light quantity variation is corrected is stored in a storage means.
