PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To offtrack margin without reducing reproducing output power even if high TPI (narrow track pitch) is attained by providing a magnetic shield consisting of a soft magnetic material near to a track direction of a magneto- resistive element for reproduction. SOLUTION: A lower magnetic shield layer 11 is film-formed on a wafer substrate and patterned to form a prescribed plane shape by etching. And a region 21 is dug down to some depth as deep as a distance between reproducing gaps by etching and a magnetic shield 11a for preventing read-in of a noise magnetic field is provided near a track end part of a magneto-resistive layer 13. The distance between reproducing gaps means the distance between the lower magnetic shield layer 11 and an upper magnetic shield layer 17. An insulating layer 12 is film-formed on the lower magnetic shield layer 11 and a magneto- resistive element 13 for reproduction and a magnetization region controlling layer 14 are film-formed on the insulating layer 12. And an electrode layer 15 is film-formed on the magnetization region controlling layer 14 and an insulating layer 16 and the upper magnetic shield layer 17 are film-formed respectively in this order on the magneto-resistive element 13 and the electrode layer 15.
