OPTICAL ELEMENT, DISPLAY DEVICE USING THE SAME AND ITS DRIVING

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify wiring to an electrode, thereby to facilitate close arrangement of plural optical elements and to obtain a display device of large image plane which can display an image of high grade by determining the potential of a first electrode by voltage applied to a second electrode constituting a pair with the first electrode without connecting the first electrode with a driving circuit. SOLUTION: The display device is provided with an illuminating means 100 for sending light to the optical device and a power source 200 for driving the optical device. Further the display device has a transparent first substrate 1 on one surface of which a plurality of divided electrodes (first electrodes) 22 are provided, a second substrate 6 through which a plurality of electrodes (second electrodes) 5 penetrate and an optical control layer 3 made of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal and has a structure in which the optical control layer 3 is held between the first substrate 5 and the second substrate 6. The first electrodes 22 are not connected with the driving circuit and their potential is floating and only the second electrodes 5 are connected with the driving circuit and potential of the first electrodes 22 is determined by voltage applied to the second electrodes 5 constituting a pair for forming electric field with the first electrode 22.
