A photodiode (PD) produces a signal current corresponding to incidence light. An integrator (10) converts the signal current into a signal voltage. A CDS circuit (20) produces the change of the signal voltage for a predetermined time. A difference detector (30) determines the difference between the two voltages output from the CDS circuit (20), and the difference is stored in a hold circuit (40). The maximum value of the voltages from the difference detectors (30) of units (100n) is determined by comparators (50), reference signal voltage generators (500), final coincidence detectors (200) and reference voltage hold circuits (300) of the unit (100n). The conversion range of an analog-to-digital converter (400) is set according to the maximum value, and the voltage values stored in the hold circuits (40) of the units (100n) are sequentially supplied to the analog-to-digital converter (400) for conversion into digital signals.
