PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polyester having hydroxymethyl group on side chain exhibiting excellent hydrophilic property, dye-affinity, adhesive property, etc., useful for paints, coating agent, adhesive, etc., by carrying out a polyaddition reaction of a specific dioxetane compound and a specific dicarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: This polyester having hydroxymethyl group on side chain expressed by formula II (n is an integer >=2) is obtained by carrying out a polyaddition reaction of (A) a dioxetane compound of formula I (k is 0-30; X is an alkylene, ethylene, etc., R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl), and (B) a dicarboxylic acid of formula HOOC-Ym-COOH (Y is an arylene or an alkylene; m is 0 or 1), in the presence of an onium salt. The R1 and R2 of the polyester are preferably methyl or ethyl. The even mole of the component A and B are preferably used. A single or plural onium salts are used, and <=20 mol.%., especially 5-15% of the salt is preferably used to the component B.
