PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for a phenylalkanoic acid amide compound showing a germicidal effect by reacting a specific imine compound with a lithium acetylide ethylenediamine complex. SOLUTION: An imine compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are each an alkyl or the like; and R3 and R4 are each methoxy or the like) [e.g. 4-methoxy-N-(2- propylidene)aniline, etc.], in an amount of 1 mol is reacted preferably with 1-2 mol lithium acetylide ethylenediamine complex by using preferably 1-3 liters of a solvent (e.g. diethyl ether, etc.), at -20 to 50 deg.C for 1-24 hours to give the objective compound of formula II. The compound of formula II [e.g. 4- methoxyphenyl-(1,1-dimethylprop-2-inyl)amine, etc.], in an amount of 1 mol is reacted with preferably 2-3 mols of an oxidizing agent by using 1-3 liters of a solvent at -10 to 50 deg.C for 0.5-12 hours and decomposed to give a propargylamine compound of formula III.
