The system includes a DC to AC inverter, temperature control system for the catalyst and a microwave circuit heating the catalyst rapidly to operational temperature. A three-way catalyst is employed. The unit is controlled by signals from: an oxygen sensor in the exhaust gases, used to establish an oxidizing atmosphere for efficient catalysis before the warm-up phase is completed; an engine rpm sensor, to infer an airflow and electrical current, air being introduced as a function of the oxygen sensor signal; a further sensor detects cooling water content (sic) before starting. DC is taken from a cigarette lighter adaptor or the vehicle battery to the inverter. The temperature control circuit switches on and off as a function of the catalyst temperature. The microwave heater includes a magnetron irradiating the exhaust gases over an interval of a few seconds at radio frequency. Catalytic converter and its electronic heating system are integrated into a single module, housed in a safety casing comprising a thermal- and electrical insulant.
