A novel anionic peroxidase gene sequence is isolated from <i>Nicotiana tomentisiformis</i>. In addition, synthetic <i>Nicotiana tomentisiformis</i> and <i>Nicotiana sylvestris</i>peroxidase gene sequences are optimized for expression in plants. The novel peroxidase gene sequences may be expressed in transgenic plants to control insects.
