The airbag module has a housing enclosing a gas generator (17) and a folded airbag (15), provided with an opening which fitted with a cover element (14), which is released to allow deployment of the inflated airbag upon detonation of the gas generator, via a piston (19) acted on by the released gases and a tension cord attached to the cover element. The initial piston movement releases a flow channel (40) for inflation of the airbag.
