The appliance (10) functions on the basis of the change in field strength detected by a sensor as it changes position relative to a magnet. Two magnets (40,42) in an anti-parallel formation have magnetizing zones with magnetizing vectors at 1800 apart. Each magnet has its own sensor (58,60) determining simultaneously field strength at two points. From the difference in the sensor signals a position dependent control signal is derived
