The invention relates to deoxyribonucleic acid molecules that are useful for stimulating the immune response in higher animals or humans, especially those deoxyribonucleic acid molecules that comprise unmethylated CpG-containing sequences with immunostimulatory properties. According to the invention, said molecules are composed of a partially self-complementary, covalently closed circular single strand that is structured as a loop. The inventive molecules have a higher stability in vivo or a higher compatibility vis-à-vis immunostimulatory nucleic acid sequences.
