PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially advantageously produce the subject compound excellent in resistances to heat, abrasion and repeated flexing by thermally decomposing a compound obtained from 1,5-naphthylenedinitrile as a raw material through amidation, chlorination and Hofmann rearrangement. SOLUTION: (A) 1,5-Naphthylenedinitrile is amidated in the presence of an inorganic strong base (e.g. sodium hydroxide) in dimethyl sulfoxide containing water to provide 1,5-naphthylenedicarboxamide and (B) the resultant compound is then reacted with chlorine in a solvent (e.g. water) to afford 1,5- naphthylenedicarboxylic acid-bis-N-chloramide. (C) The obtained compound is subsequently reacted with methanol in the presence of an inorganic strong base to provide methyl 1,5-naphthylenedicarbamate and (D) the obtained compound is then thermally decomposed in an inert solvent (e.g. dibenzyltoluene) to produce the objective compound.
