PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new naphthalene derivative which has specific oxetane rings and is useful for obtaining photocurable resins or thermosetting resins capable of being extremely quickly cured with light or heat to produce the cured products having high refractive indexes, excellent cured degrees, excellent heat resistance and excellent mechanical characteristics. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I or II (R1, R2 are each H or a 1 to 6C alkyl, for example, 2,7-bis(1-ethyl-3-oxetanylmethoxy)naphthalene of formula III. The compound of formula I or II is obtained by reacting dihydronaphthalene with a 3-alkyl-3-chloromethyloxetane or 3-chloromethyloxetance in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkali metal hydride or an alkali metal preferably at 100 to 120 deg.C for 4 to 12 hr. The alkali metal hydroxide or the like is preferably used in an amount of 1. 6 to 2. 6 moles per mole of the dihydroxynaphthalene. The further employment of a phase transfer catalyst is preferable. |
