PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for stably manufacturing a maleimide-based copolymer while suppressing the deterioration of resin and without causing a vent-up (vent clogging). SOLUTION: A process for the preparation of a maleimide-based copolymer in which process a polymer composition containing both a maleimide-based copolymer and a volatile component is treated with a vent-type screw extruder having one or more vent openings to thereby remove the volatile component, is characterized in that, letting a temperature for the viscosity of the above- described copolymer to reach 10,000 poise be T deg.C, a set temperature at least one position in the part having no vent opening at the back of the first vent shall be a temperature of (T-50) deg.C or below.
