The measuring instrument consist of a level instrument with a compensator for an automatic horizontal adjustment of the target axis, and an image processing system for a coded scale. An optic system is provided in front of the level instrument, having an axis aligned with that of the optic system of the level instrument. The optic system produces an imaging of the arbitrarily arranged scale in a vertical line.
