The gun safety device is provided as an insert (4) which is fitted into the gun and which has a spring sleeve (5) and a cooperating expansion device (9,10) fitted into the spring sleeve from one end, for clamping it in engagement with the inside wall of the barrel. A second expansion device (16) cooperates with the opposite end of the spring sleeve for locking it against the inside wall of the barrel by applied axial pressure, the first end of the spring sleeve protected by a disc (13) which is made of a material which can be removed by arc erosion, to provide access to the first expansion device.
