The core (320) of a calender roll is provided with a cover (510) of hardened thermoplastic material. The cover is applied by a method in which the core (320) is disposed substantially vertical and hot plastics is supplied from extrusion equipment (430) mounted on a turntable (400) disposed about the core. The apparatus (10) comprises a main frame assembly (15) having top and bottom chucks (325, 230) to hold the core vertical.
