PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To express a large friction coefficient and ensure a high shear strength by using an organic paper-like base material. SOLUTION: This wet friction material is obtained by impregnating a paper- like base material with an organic-inorganic composite binder in a state compressed in the thickness direction and then thermally treating the impregnation product. The impregnation of the organic-inorganic composite binder permits the expression of a large friction coefficient, and the impregnation of the organic-inorganic composite binder in the state that the paper-like base material is compressed to enhance the density of the fibers further improves the shear strength of the wet friction material.
