PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a shaft sealing apparatus of a rotary machine that can improve the apparatus or reduce the size more than the existing oil-sealing apparatus, by reducing amount of sealing oil supplied to a shaft sealing apparatus of a rotary machine and amount of oil to be exchanged in the sealing oil in the hydrogen side and sealing oil in the air side of the shaft sealing apparatus and by holding the function of the existing oil sealing apparatus. SOLUTION: This shaft sealing apparatus 3 of a rotarymachine is allocated in both oil sealing portions of a rotary machine filled with hydrogen gas and the sealing oil is individually supplied to the inside and outside of the apparatus. In this case, the shaft sealing apparatus 3 forms a short central land with (L2) provided between the hydrogen side sealing oil supply groove 51 and the air side sealing oil supply groove 52. Moreover, the chamfering area at both ends of the central land width (L2) shall be large or hydrogen side land width (L1) shall be smaller than the air side land width (L3).
