The shock absorber, comprising a hollow cylindrical body (1) and a piston (2) which are able to move relative to one another and form two communicating chambers (21, 22) partially filled with a viscoelastic fluid, and one of which is linked to a compensating chamber. The piston contains a material (90) with a porous structure which ensures the application of a coating of the viscoelastic fluid between the chambers. The porous material can be of balls or micro-cell foam, and the viscoelastic fluid can be a mixture of carbon dioxide in a supercritical state and silicone oil, or a mixture of oil, nitrogen and an emulsifier.
