A telescopic shaft (16, 20) with conical or spherical ends (22, 24) extends between end faces (42, 44) of shafts (12, 14) being measured. The shaft (16, 20) includes accurately positioned surfaces (26, 28) each having at least one aperture (30, 32) through which distances from each surface to corresponding surfaces of the shafts (12, 14) may be measured (34, 36, 38, 40). A split tube is used if the shafts to be measured are operated with gears. A spacer with apertured faces is introduced between flexible disk packs.
