The invention relates to a method for welding laminate-like packaging materials (4a, 4b, 5) which have a plastic material on the surfaces to be joined by welding, without contacting said surfaces with welding tools. To be able to interrupt the welding abruptly and resume it thereafter without spoilage, whereby the thermal energy required to provide the welding temperature is preferably generated by economically feasible means, the invention provides for a laser beam to be used as welding energy. The laser beam preferably has a constant output power and the surfaces to be welded are moved in the form of packaging material webs (5) in relation to the fixed point of incidence where the laser beam strikes the at least one material web.
