PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide lubricating compositions having a high kinematic viscosity, a small coefficient of friction, excellent heat stability, and a reduced amount of the residue of a catalyst. SOLUTION: Lubricating compositions contain 2-90 wt.% polyoxyalkylenpolyol obtained by addition polymerization of an alkylene oxide to an active hydrogen compound with the use of a phosphine oxide compound as the catalyst and having a number average molecular weight of 1,000-40,000, a CPR of not more than 5 and a content of the phosphine oxide compound of not greater than 500 ppm, 19-60 wt.% water, and 1-50 wt.% alkylene glycol having a molecular weight of not greater than 400.
