<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polarizing beam splitter from which illumination light with uniform polarization direction can be obtained with good use efficiency of light while considering cost or assembling accuracy and which is suitable for a liquid crystal projector device or the like, by combining two or more interdigital polarizing separating prism arrays. SOLUTION: The polarizing beam splitter 111C consists of a combination of an interdigital polarizing separating array 151 of a prism pair arranged in an X-axis direction and an interdigital polarizing separating array 152 of the prism pair arranged in the Y-axis direction. The incident light is divided by polarizing separating films 171 or the like in the arrays into a beam which propagates, transmits and exits and a beam which is separated and reflected by a reflection film 172 or the like to exit. Then the light is aligned into a specified polarization direction byλ/2 phase difference plates 161, 162. The plane formed by the two beams separated by the array 151 is almost perpendicular to the plane formed by the two beams separated by the array 152.</p> |
