The reduction of nickel-containing aldehyde hydrogenation catalysts is conducted in a single stage process, with hydrogen, in liquid phase containing alcohols, preferably alcohols obtained by hydrogenation of aldehydes. The reduction of nickel-containing aldehyde hydrogenation catalysts is conducted in a single stage process, with hydrogen, in liquid phase containing alcohols, preferably alcohols obtained by the hydrogenation of aldehydes, which in turn are obtained by the hydroformylation of olefins or by condensation of aldols. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the production of 2-20C alcohols by hydrogenation of corresponding aldehydes using Ni-containing catalysts, with catalysts initially reduced as claimed; and, (2) the use of produced alcohols as alcohol plasticizers or in detergents.
