PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce influence of preceding display states and to ensure excellent display quality even when a gray scale is displayed. SOLUTION: A pair of substrates 1a, 1b is arranged in a state with a specified gap in between. A bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal 2 is placed between the substrates 1a and 1b. Also a pair of electrodes 3a, 3b is arranged so as to sandwich the bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal 2 in between. Furthermore, ion quantity in the element is kept <=10 nC/cm2. In the case the liquid crystal panel P is driven by applying voltage to the pair of electrodes 3a, 3b, influence of preceding display states is reduced and excellent display quality is ensured.
